TENNIS ELBOW
TENNIS ELBOW
This is a painful condition of the outer aspect of elbow, usually the dominant arm. The pain is constant, and increases on flexing the wrist. A person is unable to sleep due to pain. The grip strength is diminished though range of motion remains intact. A band like thickening can be seen at the site, and the person has difficulty in holding a cup or hammer with that hand. This condition is often seen in persons who have to repeatedly hand grasp as in shaking hand, ice cream scoop, playing with a heavy racquet or any activity that affects the origin of two important muscles, namely extensor carpi radialis and extensor carpi ulnaris by repeated micro trauma.
Complete examination is required to rule out cervical radiculopathy and radial tunnel syndrome. Tennis elbow test is performed; joint stability has to be determined. Plain radiograph, in order to rule out bony conditions, is required.
Most patients respond to conservative therapy but some may benefit from a minimally invasive procedure. This is a treatable condition and its management is available at Aadarsh Pain Clinic
